Things to Remember After the Move

This list comes from a handout given to new home buyers by a realtor I know This is a list that I received from a realtor to give to homebuyers, I hope it helps remind you of at least one thing you have forgotten along the way!

One Month Before Moving
  • Plan your moving budget and save all your receipts
  • Moving Company or Truck? Make the reservation now
  • Travel Arrangements - verify or make air, hotel, rental car
  • If driving - get a map or visit AAA for a route
  • Moving Supplies: boxes, tape, labels, rope, blankets, etc.
    (check if any of this comes from moving co.)
  • Change of Address forms from the Post Office : here are suggestions
    • Friends and family members
    • Banks,insurance companies, mortgage company
    • Charge card and credit card companies
    • Doctors, dentists, and other service providers
    • Magazines and subscriptions
    • State and Federal Tax authorities.
    • IRS (the IRS has a special form at www.irs.gov )
  • Utilities: Set up stop service date for gas, electric, water, cable, telephone, garbage, cable
  • Sign up for these services at your new address
  • Familiarize yourself and your family with your new area, get maps or take time to visit if close by.
Two Weeks Before Moving
  • Utilities: Set up stop service date for gas, electric, water, cable, telephone, garbage, cable
  • Sign up for these services at your new address.
  • Recruit moving-day help.
  • Confirm travel reservations.
  • Arrange to close or transfer your bank account, if appropriate.
The Day Before Moving
  • Get Cash for your trip
  • Pick up rental truck.
  • Check oil and gas in your car.
  • If traveling, make sure you have tickets, charge cards, and other essentials.
  • Packing Supplies you will need::
    • Boxes
    • all sizes Bubble wrap or other cushioning material
    • Marking pens
    • Tape measure
    • Pocket Knife
    • Furniture pads or old blankets
    • Packing tape
    • Medical Kit for injuries or cuts
    • Scissors
Packing Tips
  • Label each box with the room in the new home to which it should be delivered.
  • Clearly mark fragile items.
  • Write on the box the name of things that you may need to find.
  • Count the number of boxes
Things to leave out - Make sure to put these in an easy to find place!
  • Travel Cash and Credit Cards
  • change of clothes
  • toiletries
  • medicine
  • maps
  • food, and drinks
  • If you have children, pack a bag of games and activities for the trip.
